Summers are synonymous with linen fabrics. The hot, humid weather makes one reach out for linen shirts which feel super cool on the skin, have a soft hand feel and feel "breathable".
Linen is derived from the flax plant which thrives on rainwater alone and doesn’t need any fertilisers or pesticides to grow. This makes linen, a very sustainable and environmental-friendly fashion choice.
But how do you care for such a delicate fabric? Certainly not by throwing your linen shirts into the washing machine! Below are some tips to give your linens some TLC they deserve:
- Wash with lukewarm to cool water. Hot water can cause shrinkage as well as damage the fiber.
- Use a very mild detergent to wash the linen garments. Detergents for babies clothes are a good choice for the delicate linen.
- Do not wring, twist or scrub linen garments as this can stretch the fabric.
- Avoid fabric softeners. Linen is a natural fiber that becomes soft with every wash. Fabric softeners will only damage the fabric and reduce its absorbency.
- Warm iron only. Linens look best with light creases so avoid using a hot iron and giving the garment a stiff crease-less finish.
